Kennel Manager

Manage and work within a team setting to oversee the health, wellbeing and general care of the dogs at our shelter. 

Location: TEARS Kennels, 4 Lekkerwater Road, Sunnydale

Department: Kennels

Schedule: Full time position, must be able to work weekends

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the Kennel Crew (Kennel Caregivers, Kennel Co-Ordinators, Adoption Counsellors, Dog Trainers) and oversee daily operations
  • Lead onsite kennel volunteer program which includes working with assigned staff on volunteer projects and training. Handle volunteer dissatisfaction and issues promptly and appropriately 
  • Manage animal care files (vet cards, WatchDog app) and schedule vet appointments
  • Manage onsite inventory and ordering of all supplies 
  • Provide care and handling for dogs and puppies at the shelter
  • Update feeding guidelines and prepare food
  • Ensure all dogs and puppies receive any medication or treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian or animal care staff 
  • Closely work with existing Dog Trainer, identifying behavioural issues and sharing observations, follow training plans for specific dogs designed by trainer
  • Demonstrate approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred
  • Interact with tours, be available to greet tours, speak about specific animals and answer questions 
  • Empower, educate and counsel potential adopters 
  • Oversee training all new and current staff 
  • Report all maintenance and equipment issues
  • Ensure clean work areas and preserving the physical appearance of the shelter.

Skills and Experience

  • At least 3 years of related leadership experience with special emphasis on personnel management
  • Strong desire and ability to work with dogs. Previous experience a plus
  • Must have general knowledge of dogs’ various physical, emotional and mental characteristics, training and behaviour needs. Able to demonstrate working knowledge of breeds, care giving, animal characteristics and individual personalities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy
  • Experience in team building and staff development required
  • Work requires continual attention to detail and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to facilitate group processes as well as develop and influence others
  • Ability to promote a positive work environment
  • Demonstrate accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Computer skills necessary, including Google Documents, checking and responding to emails.

Kennel Co-Ordinator

Work independently and within a team setting to oversee the health, wellbeing and general care of the dog and puppies at our shelter.

Location: TEARS Kennels, 4 Lekkerwater Road, Sunnydale

Department: Kennels

Schedule: Full time position: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide care, training and handling for dogs and puppies at the shelter
  • Feed and train dogs and puppies according to department guidelines. Preparing food (special diets closely followed), reporting observations and suggested changes to Kennel Manager
  • Demonstrate approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred
  • Empower, educate and counsel potential adopters 
  • Ensure all dogs and puppies receive any medication or treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian or animal care staff
  • Closely work with existing Dog and Puppy Trainer, identifying behavioural issues and sharing observations, follow training plans for specific puppies designed by trainer
  • Facilitate socialising, enrichment and dog and puppy classes with Trainer and volunteers
  • Responsible for taking dogs and puppies to any appointments (clinic, physiotherapy, grooming, etc) 
  • Ensure clean work areas and preserving the physical appearance of the area
  • Interact with tours, be available to greet tours, speak about specific animals and answer questions
  • Manage dogs and puppies in foster care.

  • Demonstrate approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred
  • Must have general knowledge of dogs’ various physical, emotional and mental characteristics, training and behaviour needs. Able to demonstrate working knowledge of breeds, care giving, animal characteristics and individual personalities
  • Demonstrate personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Computer skills necessary, including Google Documents, checking and responding to emails
  • Valid driver’s license.

Adoption Counsellor

Work independently and within a team setting to oversee our adoption program and assist with the wellbeing and general care of the dogs and puppies at our shelter.

Location: TEARS Kennels, 4 Lekkerwater Road, Sunnydale

Department: Kennels

Schedule: Full time position: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the complete adoption process: applications, discussions, decisions, medical records and follow-ups
  • Empower, educate and counsel potential adopters
  • Assist with adoption events by collaborating with various teams such as Animal Care, Marketing and volunteers
  • Work closely with marketing team to highlight our adoptable animals and co-create and support adoption promotions
  • Implement processes for facilitating adoption introductions (meeting family members, dog to dog, dog to cat, etc).

We are seeking one person based in the Southern Suburbs and one person based in the Northern Suburbs / Cape Winelands.

SAVC Veterinarian

TEARS Animal Rescue is looking for an SAVC registered Veterinarian for Small Animals with 3-5 years minimum experience. Animal welfare and orthopaedic experience is a bonus. Candidates must be willing to work after hours and weekends on a two Vet roster.
