Bernie Mac finds himself in Hot Water over some table scraps.

Bernie Mac came to the TEARS Veterinary Clinic on the 28th January 2022, from his sweet and caring owner in Vrygrond. He had wandered over into a neighbours house and stole some food off their countertops. The neighbour in her anger threw boiling hot water at him to chase him off.

This resulted in Bernie Mac having 2nd and 3rd degree burns to the right side of his body, his owner was horrified and upset by this incident, but sadly had no idea what to do or where to take him, she eventually heard about TEARS Animal Welfare and called us to please come and collect her dog and treat his wounds.

The TEARS Mobile Clinic rushed out to go and collect Bernie Mac.

However, Bernie Mac had been burnt a few days prior, so he was in horrible shock and so much pain, the TEARS Veterinary team worked fast and quickly, put Bernie Mac on a drip for the pain and shock, clipped away what hair was left on his right side, so that they could assess and treat the burn wounds.

Bernie Mac’s next couple of days was rather tough, his rehabilitation consisted of Burnshield dressings and creams, reapplying multiple times a day, cleaning the wounds to avoid further infections and clipping the hair again and again as it regrew. Luckily, within 5 days of his arrival Bernie Mac was improving tremendously. He was living it up with the TEARS Kennel Manager Luke Kruyt, and they formed a nice little bond while having to spend so much time together.

Bernie Mac’s recovery has been rather successful and fairly quickly, much thanks to the TEARS Veterinary Clinic’s fast and persistent actions as well as a change of diet to the Hill’s Prescription Diet Derm Defense dog food with Histaguard Complex, a proprietary complex of bioactives and phytonutrients, helping to strengthen skin barrier allowing for Bernie Mac’s burns to heal.

Bernie Mac is an adorable wiry-haired medium sized mix breed male, who gets on well with most other dogs. He adores people and is very affectionate.

His owner has since surrendered him to TEARS as the court case for Bernie Mac against the neighbour is still pending and she would prefer that Bernie Mac remains safe and not get hurt again.

Bernie Mac came to TEARS Animal Rescue from Vrygrond, a low-income community in Muizenberg, with severe scalding and 3rd degree burns across the right side of his body.

We first heard about his plight on 28 January 2022, a few days after he wandered over into a neighbouring house and stole food off their countertops. In anger, the neighbour threw boiling hot water at him to chase him off. His horrified owner was terribly upset by the incident, but unfortunately had no idea what to do or where to take him. After finding out about TEARS and all the work we do from animals in her community, she didn’t hesitate to call and request help. The TEARS Mobile Clinic rushed out to collect Bernie Mac and bring him back to the TEARS Veterinary Clinic for emergency veterinary treatment.

On arrival Bernie Mac was in a state of shock and in immense pain, having been burnt a few days prior. The TEARS Veterinary Team worked quickly to make Bernie Mac more comfortable and start him on his road to recovery. He was placed on a drip and underwent surgery to assess, clean and treat his burn wounds.

Following his arrival, Bernie Mac remained as an ICU patient at the TEARS Welfare Clinic for a few days before moving into foster care with TEARS’ Kennel Manager, Luke Kruyt, for extra attention, TLC and care. His rehabilitation consisted of pain relief, daily Burnshield dressings and soothing creams to help heal his wounds.

Bernie Mac made a miraculous recovery within a month. His recovery was boosted thanks to Hill’s Prescription Diet Derm Defense dog food with Histaguard Complex, a proprietary complex of bioactives and phytonutrients which helped strengthen Bernie Mac’s skin barrier, allowing for his burns to heal.

His owner has since surrendered him to TEARS as the court case for Bernie Mac against the neighbour is still pending and she would prefer that Bernie Mac remains safe and not get hurt again.

His ordeal has not hampered his joie de vivre and love for life. He is a friendly and playful boy, who is always keen to be in on the action. He gets along well with most other dogs and loves being the centre of attention.  He’s looking for a loving family who will look past the marks on my body and see the beautiful soul that makes him such a wonderful dog. Bernie Mac is waiting for you to make his dreams of a loving home come true!
